Glengall Ltd (P&S Transport) is a sub-contractor that transports asphalt and aggregate materials in bulk for construction companies. Glengall Ltd was first established in 2002 and has since grown into a successful haulage business consisting of forty-three vehicles. Since joining FORS the company has seen significant improvements in their fleet. Amrik Padda, director of Glengall Ltd explains how FORS has been beneficial to their company.
We came across FORS through communication with a fellow haulier company. After hearing the benefits of FORS from a reliable source with personal experience with FORS, we were encouraged to then do further research on what else FORS has to offer that could be beneficial to our business. After seeing the policies FORS suggests to implement into a haulage business, we decided to use these policies to test how much FORS can positively affect our company. Once we implemented the policies, we saw noticeable improvements in the business and so we decided to aim to become FORS accredited.
We were able to achieve our FORS Bronze accreditation first time around. After achieving our first FORS accreditation we were encouraged to continue using the resources FORS has to offer such as the e-Learning resources and toolkits. After seeing the significant changes in our fleet from just aiming for a Bronze accreditation, we decided to aim for a Silver accreditation.
Once we became a FORS accredited company we really took advantage of the educational resources available for our drivers, as we felt expanding our driver’s road knowledge and ensuring it is up to date ensured the safety of our drivers and other road users. One of the courses we felt was very beneficial for our drivers was the Safe Urban Driving course. By completing this course, this allowed our drivers to see the road from a vulnerable road user’s perspective helping them have a better understanding of road safety.
‘Our drivers are now a lot more aware of vulnerable road users thanks to the Safe Urban Driving course.’ – Amrik Padda
Furthermore, not only were the educational resources proven to be beneficial but also the wide ranges of toolkits available to us were also very useful in improving our fleet. In particular, the Fuel Tracker was very useful as we are a large fleet and having a system where we could keep track of our vehicles emission output and fuel usage allowed us to see where our fleet was making progress. Having this information helped us know where and when to implement better methods and techniques to improve these factors.
‘As we are a fleet of many vehicles having a fuel tracker has been very beneficial in keeping track of fuel usage.’ – Manjinder Hair
Our main reason for aiming for Bronze to Silver and then to Gold accreditation’s was based off the evidential benefits each accreditation provided to the company. Now that we have are Gold accredited, we have felt that the full benefits of performing at our company’s optimum level has helped improve our credibility to other clients and secure more business contracts.
In the last year, we have increased our annual KMPL by 1.43% thanks to FORS.
|
KMPL | Incidents | Number of PCNs |
Feb 15 – Jan 2016 (base year) | 2.79 | 20 | 19 |
Feb 17 – Jan 18 | 2.83 | 10 | 17 |
Percentage improvement | 1.43% | 50% | 11.76% |
At Glengall Ltd, we ensure our driver’s health is at their peak and suitable for driving by requesting employees to complete a health questionnaire to ensure that they are fit to work. Furthermore, we also request our drivers to get regular eye tests as poor eyesight is ever changing and can become a major road risk to other road users.
Moreover, at Glengall Ltd when advertising for new recruits we offer a paid four week buddy plan to help encourage new tipper drivers to join the industry in the safe and comfortable manor. This four week buddy plan consists of a new driver shadowing a more experienced driver in their daily duties which they will have to carry out once their initial training period is completed and have been deemed suitable to carry out these tasks independently.
The type of vehicles used for our mode of work is known for its contribution of noise pollution to the environment. After making use of the FORS anti-idling toolkit our drivers now know when to switch of their engines in order to reduce their vehicles noise pollution.
The materials we pick up and deliver must be kept at high temperatures in an insulated body in a vehicle with a PTO system. As of yet there are no other engines or vehicles suitable for our mode of work more environmentally friendly other than the Euro engine six, diesel vehicles. However we are aware the vehicle industry is continuously improving we will keep up to date with any changes made for vehicles suitable for our mode of work.
At Glengall Ltd we plan to continue encouraging our drivers to expand and refresh their road knowledge by completing FORS e-Learning modules and courses. We also plan to keep up to date with any vehicle improvements or releases that would be more environmentally friendly to carry out our work with. We will also continue to make use of the FORS toolkits to ensure we are implementing the best practices and methods into our business.
Becoming FORS Gold accredited once again would reassure to our employees that they are still consistently performing to the best of their ability and encourage them to carry on doing so. Moreover, remaining Gold accredited would keep our company’s credibility at its peak and reassure and bring in new cliental.
