We were aware of FORS for many years as an advisory body to operators working within the Capital; our customer base became increasingly insistent that supply chain providers are FORS accredited and so our journey began towards achieving Bronze and later stepping up to Silver at Quayside Depot in 2015 and achieving Bronze at Coventry, Leeds and Exeter.

Looking back we thought that the initial audit was quite daunting, in so much as we never had a previous template to follow or any guidance, the auditor was thorough yet helpful and highlighted areas for improvement which we quickly implemented and set systems in place and we were duly accredited bronze. We have just recently renewed FORS Silver and so going for gold is the next logical step for us as a forward looking organization to demonstrate just how serious we are about safety, compliance and the environment in which we live and work.

Once we became FORS accredited, we soon started to utilise the excellent training opportunities available to us, our drivers have all benefitted from E Learning and FORS Training in Safe Urban Driving, Lo-City and TRIP giving them the tools necessary to be safer, greener and more aware within their working environments as well as satisfying their individual development plans and CPC Requirements. Our transport supervisor is also a FORS Practitioner enabling us to keep up to date with good operating and best working practices.

‘Our drivers have all benefitted from FORS Training in Safe Urban Driving, Lo-City and TRIP giving them the tools necessary to be safer, greener and more aware within their working environments as well as satisfying their individual development plans and CPC Requirements’ – Tony Fitzgerald Transport Supervisor.

We as a company are certainly benefitting from the FORS standards that we have implemented, twice annually driving licence checks, and annual occupational health checks for drivers including 6 monthly eyesight checks. Our modern fleet of vehicles are equipped with FORS Standard direct vision and audible warning systems as well as being fully Euro 6 compliant, as required by Crossrail, Tideway and HS2. Our drivers and staff receive training of the highest standard; this will filter through to our customer base who in turn can be confident that we pride ourselves that the TCP supply chain is competent, safe and compliant. The fuel and emissions data we gather through FORS have also formed the basis of management reports for our recent ISO14001 accreditation.

‘Our drivers and staff receive training of the highest standard’ – Michael Munn Operations manager.

Across our fleet of mixed vehicle size and type we have seen an increase in average fuel efficiency and this we are striving to improve through a Euro 6 compliant HGV fleet, and measures to improve driver performance through training and toolbox talks which will also encompass the need to remain compliant to reduce PCNs

Driver health and fitness is constantly monitored, annual health checks are carried out, six monthly eyesight tests both in house and by qualified opticians.

We are fortunate to have a very low turnover of drivers; we did have a vacancy to fill this year and used local advertising successfully.

Quayside Depot is situated on an industrial estate in Maldon Essex, We are surrounded on 3 sides by large industrial undertakings, and our vehicles are all Euro 6 compliant and have switchable white noise reversing warning so can be switched off for quiet operation. Our business predominantly operates 730am to 5pm, noise impact during loading, unloading and vehicle washing is minimal due to our proximity, servicing is carried out by main dealerships.

We have considered the case for other transportation modes and alternative vehicles, unfortunately Modal shift is cost prohibitive and does not lend itself in any way to our business which predominantly delivers plant to construction sites, we have one Mitsubishi Hybrid Vehicle on the fleet which runs on Electric and Petrol and as the technology develops it will be something we can possibly utilise more in the future.

Here at TCP we are a forward looking company, we are constantly seeking ways to improve in all areas of our business, we have just introduced a new vehicle schematics system for tracking, driver behaviours, journey details etc. We invest in our people with quality training and transferrable skills ensuring our workforce are equipped with the right tools to carry out their duties to the highest standard in a safe and competent manner.

Becoming Gold accredited would be the icing on the cake for us, it gives our existing and prospective customers and peers the confidence that we are among the best in our field and the support, standards and training that FORS provides ensure that we are fully equipped going forward to continue to be so for many years to come
