Transport for London (TfL) introduced a new 20mph speed limit throughout the streets of Central London across 8.9km of the capital’s roads. The speed limit applies to roads within the Congestion Charge Zone (CCZ).
Speed is attributed as a factor to approximately 37 per cent of fatal or nearly fatal road collisions in London. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, believes reducing the speed limit is an important step towards achieving his Vision Zero mission to eliminating death and serious injury from London’s transport network.
The Mayor has said: “I am absolutely determined to do everything I can to eradicate all deaths and serious injuries on London’s roads and these new measures are a vital step along the way to helping us to achieve this.
“By cutting speed limits on TfL’s roads within the Congestion Zone we are saving lives, while at the same time making our streets more appealing for Londoners to walk and cycle around the capital.”
To raise awareness of the change, TfL launched a ‘Watch your speed’ marketing campaign focused on 20mph speed limit. The campaign is live on print, radio and digital advertising.
