FORS eLearning modules have sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the Eastern Caribbean country of Saint Lucia.
While in Saint Lucia, Michael Barratt MBE, manager at Transport for London, observed local drivers engaging in poor driving practices such as leaving their engines idling during deliveries.
Barratt discussed the issues he observed with Cletus Johnson, a Saint Lucian taxi driver who has committed to do his part in decreasing the environmental impact the transport industry has on the planet by exercising best practice. As part of a mentoring programme they decided to set-up a study to observe the effect FORS-style practices would have on Johnson’s overall profit and environmental impact.
“After discussing the issues with my friend, Cletus Johnson, we agreed to set up a study which includes him switching off the engine during each collection/drop-off, maintaining a diary, and monitoring his fuel spending. My role is to support Cletus and calculate the savings and benefits,” shared Barratt.
While it’s no secret pollution is a concern for the planet, many countries still have no policies or regulations in place to reduce pollution. Since January, Cletus has been working towards decreasing his environmental footprint by following new policies and procedures as well as completing FORS eLearning modules, already passing ‘SmartDriving’ and ‘LoCITY: Time to clean it up – learning for drivers.’
If Cletus follows the programme designed for him by Barratt, the end of the year forecasted savings will be approximately $1,000 (£282.47) in addition to a 0.35t CO2 reduction.
Keep up the good work, Cletus!
